Mother Goose

When: Monday Mornings from 9:00 - 11:00
Ages:  0 - pre kindergarten
Where: Falkland Elementary School Room 29

Parent-Child Mother Goose is based on the idea that playful, imaginative language should be an important part of a child's life from infancy and beyond.
At Mother Goose, you as the parent are the primary learner - the facilitators are teaching the songs and rhymes to you.
We teach a collection of songs, rhymes, and stories so that parents can be equipped to sing with their children outside of our group – and so that children can sing with their friends and other members of their family. Rhymes, songs and stories are beautiful, practical tools that make daily life with a baby or young child easier and more fun!

We sing and tell stories and rhymes with our children for many excellent reasons… these include:
·Creating a stronger bond/attachment with our child
·Building language skills - early literacy development
·Changing our child’s mood – songs can be very soothing
·Capturing our child’s attention
· Continuing our own childhood culture
· It’s free and convenient – we can do it anywhere!
Points to Ponder:
·Face to face is best! Look in your child’s eyes when singing or rhyming
·Sing something that you and your child enjoy
·Match your child’s mood with the beat of a song and then gradually make changes to~gently alter his or her mood
·Be willing to repeat rhymes and songs over and over
·Sing to your child - the sound of YOUR voice is what your child wants to hear!

Program Routine:
Remember, we learn the material through alot of repetition. That way you can take the songs home, share them with your partner and other caregivers, and build them into your daily routines and rituals. The program is taught in the classic oral tradition with no books or props - the idea being that the material is firmly established in our memories so that it is easily retrievable. That way parents will be able to learn it and use it without needing anything other than their voice. On the last week of the program each participant will be provided with a booklet of rhymes and song written down for future reference.
We know that sometimes as a parent with children it is hard to be in a group setting, please be aware that this is a class for you and your child! We want you both to feel welcome and comfortable at Mother Goose! The only thing we will ask is that you put toys away during class time as they tend to distract the children.
We encourage you to be engaged with your child, look them in the eye while singing, touch them gently and enjoy your special time together!

It's important to note that Mother Goose is not a drop-in program. Parents are asked to try and come to every class so that everyone has the opportunity to absorb and learn the program material. If you feel you cannot commit to the program, please let us know ASAP so we can give your spot to someone who might be waiting.

If you or your child is ill, please miss a class so that we avoid spreading germs.

We love to encourage guests at the program (like a Dad or Grandparent) but if possible please let us know in advance so we can prepare accordingly and make them feel welcome.

A 10-15 min snack break is provided during the program. We are happy to offer healthy food for parents and children!  It's a great opportunity to socialize and get to know other families.

Please let us know what you think! If you enjoy the cultural classic songs best, or if you would like to learn more new rhymes, please share your thoughts with the facilitators. We want to hear from you so that we can continually improve the program and modify it to meet the varying needs of different classes. Your program participation is key!
